Things To Write On A Thank You Card For Birthdays

Choose a card design that reflects the theme of your recent birthday party.

Thank you notes exhibit your gratitude for birthday gifts from individual guests or well-wishers. Although the note itself need not be long, writing a thank you card can be tricky. Wording can vary according to the recipient, but your general structure and tone of sincerity should remain consistent for each party.

Specify the Gift

Even if you received dozens of gifts, specifying the exact gift helps you remember what they gave and explain how you intend on using the item. For example, if you received a red scarf, begin your thank you note by saying:

"Dear Melanie:

Thank you for the red scarf!"

Explain Why You Love Gift

Mention the gift beyond simply saying "I love it!" A short clipped phrase does not sound convincing or especially thoughtful. If you do not particularly care for the gift, think of a reason why someone else might like it and apply that reason to yourself.

For example, do not end by saying, "Thank you for the red scarf. I love it!"

Instead, elaborate by saying, "I love it! The cranberry red goes perfectly with my new charcoal gray coat."

Fulfilling Your Wish

A good gift should be something someone wants but has not been able or willing to purchase for themselves. People want to feel that their gift fulfills some previous need or desire.

For example, when writing a thank you note for your red scarf say, "The cranberry red goes perfectly with my new charcoal gray coat. I have been searching for this exact color for a while, but could never find the right combination of fabric and hue."

Describe Future Uses

Loved-ones hope that you will use their gift and love hearing the ways you intend to do so. Even if it is not an item you see yourself using frequently, if ever, imagine possible ways you might use the item. Hearing that you are excited and eager to sport your new gift, whatever it may be, validates the gift giver's choice of present.

For example, when writing a thank you note for your red scarf, conclude the card by saying, "I can't wait to wear it next week to the concert we're attending."
