Monologue Tips For Beauty Pageants

Her choice of monologue can tell the judges a lot about a pageant contestant.

The talent portion of a beauty pageant can be stressful, so it pays to be well prepared. A monologue is a good choice for the talent competition, because when it's done well it can reveal a lot about the contestant's personality. Don't wait until the last minute to put together your talent piece. Preparation shows when you're on stage and gives the judges the best impression of you as a whole.

Choose Carefully

Allow lots of time to find an appropriate monologue piece. If you register for the pageant months in advance, don't wait until the week before to find a monologue. Choose a monologue that complements your strengths as a person and as a performer. Try to choose one with which you can connect. If you have had a similar experience or felt similar emotions, it will be much easier to get into the character and give a convincing performance. The judges try to learn about the individual through her talent.

Practice

Break the monologue into sections and memorize a little bit more each day. By the week before the pageant, you should be able to recite the monologue on cue at any time. Also, practice the monologue in front of an audience. Perform the piece before a gathering of your family and friends, and ask one of them to videotape the performance. This will reduce your chances of forgetting the words in front of a crowd, and you can see on the video if you have developed bad habits such as fidgeting. Also, when you arrive at the pageant the days are very busy and practice time is limited, so be ready before you go.

Perform With Confidence

Don't focus on one person or judge while reciting the monologue. Also, don't be afraid to use the stage. Reciting a monologue is acting, and it's not necessary to stand in one spot the whole time. Be prepared to make a mistake. The worst thing you can do in a beauty pageant talent competition is stop. The judges will respect you for recovering gracefully, so don't panic.
