Painting Art Projects

You can even create paint projects with your hands and feet.

Paint is a wonderfully versatile medium that makes painting art projects limitless in possibilities. Ranging from classical images on canvas to decorating household objects, painting can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Tempera and acrylic paint are the simplest choices because they are water-based and do not take long to dry.

Landscape Painting

Landscape painting captures a natural scene. Through the use of techniques that create distance and depth, the artist is able to show the foreground, middle ground, background and horizontal line. Use drawing paper of your preferred size and tempera paint to create your painting. Look at images of landscapes from books or photographs to choose the image you want to paint. Lightly sketch the drawing on your paper with a pencil before applying the paint.

Painting on Foil

Foil paintings have a shiny metallic canvas that compliments the painting designs. Wrap one side of a piece of tag board with aluminum foil and tape it on the back. Use a dull pencil to lightly sketch a drawing into the foil. Trace the pencil sketch with a black marker. Use a generous amount of tempera or acrylic paint to fill in the outlined sketch. Allow the paint to dry between coats. The silver of the foil creates an attractive glow in the painting.

Painted Shoes

Old shoes don't have to be thrown out; they can be turned into pieces of art. Take an old pair of shoes that you will not wear again and assure they are clean and dry. If the shoe has shoelaces, remove them. Choose an image or inspiration whose theme you wish to use for the theme of your shoe art. Sketch the image onto the shoe with a pencil. You may "prime" the shoe with white paint if it is darkly colored, and let it dry. Use acrylic or liquid tempera paint to fill in your sketch with colors of your choice. Let it dry and replace the shoelaces.

Spray Bottle Mural

Spray bottle murals are like controlled graffiti. They are messy, so create them in an open space, wearing aprons. Tape a long piece of rolled paper flat onto a wall or fence. Fill several spray bottles with different colors of thin tempera or acrylic paint. Stand back and spray the paper with color, designing it how you like. Use the spray bottle settings to make the paint come out in straight streams or dispersed bursts. Overlap different colors for blending and mixing effects. Let the paint dry and display the mural for all to see.
