Repair A Torn Painting

Do you have a painting that got torn? Whether it’s an old family heirloom or a priceless masterpiece, you have a couple of roads that you can take to get it repaired. You can take the economical road, and do it yourself, or you can take the expensive road and call a professional to come in and repair it for you. If it’s just a couple of small tears that need to be fixed, it probably wouldn’t be worth it to call in a professional. However, if the whole painting is in shambles, and it needs more than a small touch up, you may not want to try it yourself.

Instructions

1. Cut out a piece of adhesive paper just a little bigger than the area of the tear. You don’t need to use a whole lot of this, just enough to cover the area and provide a backdrop for the tear so that it will stay in place.

2. Lay the painting down on a hard floor or tabletop.

3. Arrange the torn area of the painting so that it looks natural. Sometimes the tears can overlap each other in a way that you wouldn’t even know that it was torn. But sometimes this isn’t the case. This can be difficult, but do the best you can in trying to save the integrity of the original artwork.

4. Apply the painter’s tape to the tear. This will keep the canvas in place while you apply the contact paper in the back.

5. Flip the painting over, so that it’s lying on the floor face down.

6. Apply the contact paper to the torn area. When you apply it, put it down slowly. Start with one edge of the paper and lay it down gently to the other side. This will ensure that it lays on the canvas straight and doesn’t get any air bubbles.

7. Remove the painter’s tape. It will help to get the tape a little bit moist before your remove it. That way none of the painting comes up with the tape.

8. Touch up as needed.
