Proper Procedure For Fill A Butane Lighter

Fill a butane lighter from the bottom inlet valve.

Many people see the discovery of fire as one of the biggest steps in human evolution, and since its discovery we have found new and safer ways to harness the energy of fire. Using butane lighters, you can literally hold fire in the palm of your hand. Butane lighters use gas to power the flame, and inevitably the butane gas will run out with extended use. Refilling a butane lighter must be done carefully and correctly to prevent gas leaks, accidental fires or burns.

Instructions

1. Hold the lighter firmly in one hand to be sure it is completely cool. Do not attempt to fill a lighter that is lit or that is still hot from the last lighting, as the butane gas is extremely flammable.

2. Adjust the flame height knob on the bottom of the lighter to its lowest setting. Some butane lighters feature adjustable wheels, while others require you to use a screwdriver. Adjusting to the lowest setting will reduce the risk of accidental flame when filling.

3. Hold the lighter upside down in one hand. Press a small screwdriver into the refill inlet valve, located next to the flame height adjustment. You may hear air escaping; hold this valve down until no more air escapes. Emptying the air allows room for the new butane gas and prevents lighter malfunctioning.

4. Shake the butane gas can for four to five seconds to agitate the gas. Holding the lighter upside down, press the stem of the refill can into the inlet valve. Hold it in this position for 10 seconds, allowing gas to flow into the lighter.

5. Allow the gas to settle in the lighter for five minutes so that the gas has time to adjust to the temperature within the lighter. Immediate lighting can result in accidental flaming or other lighter malfunction.

6. Turn the flame height adjuster slowly until it reaches your desired flame level. If you try to ignite the lighter and the height is too high, the lighter will hiss; adjust as necessary.
