Write A Poem About A Friend

Writing a poem is a great way to honor and express your affection towards your friend. By creating a poem specifically for him, you can show this individual how much you care about him and make it clear why you value his friendship so highly. Whether presented as a gift or just shared in a friendly gathering, this poem will likely be appreciated by the person who inspired it and prove to him that your feelings are real and your dedication to the friendship complete.

Instructions

1. Create a list of your friend's physical features. List particularly positive features, such as kind eyes, bright smile or golden hair. Pair adjectives with each feature to paint a picture with your words and make it clear what sets the individual's features apart from others.

2. Create a list of the things you like about your friend's personality. Select terms that adequately convey the emotional characteristics of the individual in question. For example, if your friend is trustworthy, compassionate or creative, list these personality traits. These positive characteristics should be mentioned in your poem. Listing them prior to beginning your poetic efforts can help you organize your thoughts.

3. Choose a poetic form. Select an open form, such as free verse in which you can compose lines of a meter and rhyme structure that you prefer or pick a more restrictive form such as cinquain or diamante, both of which may make it easier for you to move through the poetry-writing process as they present you with a clear guide.

4. Select a rhyming scheme. Some poetic forms have a prescribed rhyming scheme, while others can be rhymed or unrhymed depending on the writer's taste. If the form you selected does not have a set rhyming scheme, decide if and how you would like to use rhyme to enhance your poetic creation.

5. Follow the selected form and structure, referencing your lists to compose your friend-inspired poem. As you use items on your physical and personality lists, cross them off, so you do not repeat them. If you think of more things to add to the poem as you write, don't feel confined to the already created lists, but instead allow your imagination to run wild.

6. Feature your friend's name. By including your friend's name in the title or in the poem itself, you make it perfectly clear who inspired the writing of the poem. Feature this identifying title in your poem, either listing the individual's proper name or the nickname that you use when referring to her.
