Reduce Urethane Paint

Urethane paint is one of the most commonly used types of paint for cars today.

Urethane paint is one of the most commonly used automotive paints in body shops. Urethane paint is durable and is easy to apply, though it is slightly more expensive than some other paints. You can't pour urethane paint straight from the can directly into the spray gun and apply it to a car. Before painting, you must reduce urethane paint with paint reducer, also known as paint thinner. You have to mix the correct ratio of paint and reducer for the best results in the finished paint job.

Instructions

1. Pour the urethane paint into a large mixing cup made specifically for mixing automotive paint. You can find these at any automotive paint supply store. Pour the amount you will use to paint with in the next few hours, as you must spray urethane paint soon after mixing; it does not keep well longer than a few hours.

2. Use a separate mixing cup to pour the urethane reducer into. Follow the exact instructions on the label as to how much reducer to add. For most regular urethane paint jobs, the ratio of paint to reducer is 4 to 1. Start with this and test a small section or separate test panel to see if the paint is coming out of the sprayer and applying to the sheet metal at the force and consistency you want. If the paint seems too thick, add more reducer.

3. Add the reducer to the urethane paint and use a stir stick to mix the two well. Pour the mixture into a paint cup to be attached to the spray gun. Use the mixture within a few hours or it will begin to break down, causing imperfections in the finished paint job.
