Set Up An Hvlp

Using an HVLP is just another way of painting.

HVLP, short for high-volume low-pressure, is an air gun similar to an airbrush gun, the main difference being it is used for larger paint projects, such as vehicles. Having your own HVLP is handy if you reassemble your own cars or just want to repaint your vehicle and don't want to pay the cost of a professional. The entire paint job depends on how you set up your HVLP paint gun.

Instructions

1. Check your user manual for the pressure intake the HVLP is able to use. This is going to determine what kind of air compressor you are able to use. Once you find the information in the user manual (listed in CFM, or cubic feet per minute) you can purchase the correct compressor. These compressors are found in the same location you purchased the HVLP.

2. Attach the compressor to the air intake valve on the HVLP. Depending on the paint gun you are using, the valve is either on the top or bottom of the gun (typically on the bottom).

3. Mix whatever color you want to spray paint. You can mix your paint in any old canister until you have the desired color, then pour the paint into the canister. Attach the paint canister onto the the paint intake valve (this is larger than the compressor valve and is marked). If the canister fits on the top of the spray gun you want to hold the canister upright, then connect the spray gun to canister and twist it into place.

4. Place the desired tip on the front of the spray gun. There are different sizes of tips, starting with "one" (this is the smallest). The smaller the tip, the smaller the area you are going to cover while painting. Once the tip is in place you can turn on the compressor and squeeze the trigger to beginning painting your desired object. You do want to practice a few strokes with the paint first, as it may take a moment or two for it to begin properly coming out of the paint gun.
