Scarf Window Design Ideas

Try a sheer scarf for romance.

Today's window scarves come in a variety of fabric choices and colors. When compared to other traditional treatments, scarves provide a simple and economical solution for covering most window openings. You can use window scarf valances in a number of ways depending on your personal taste and decor. Each scarf window design idea adds a sense of style and warmth to any room.

Simple Look

Opt for a simple window scarf design idea for a contemporary look. When calculating the desired scarf length, double the height and account for several loops of fabric that drape across the top of the window. Loosely wind the fabric along the curtain rod, letting the tails of the scarf frame each side of the window. The scarf tails can hang to the floor or stop just below the windowsill.

Multiple Scarves

Use multiple scarves in different colors to coordinate with the color scheme of the room. Swag three scarves just as you would a single scarf; as a decorator touch, braid the lengths of scarves on one side of the window. For a different effect, try installing scarf sconces or medallions as an alternative to a plain curtain rod.

Faux Curtains

Hang a pair of scarves on a curtain rod to mimic curtain panels. To achieve this look, attach the scarves to the rod with inexpensive clip rings, which gives you the ability to open and close the scarves just like curtains. Purchase the scarves slightly longer than needed for a romantic, puddling effect.

Crisscross Sheers

Create a variation of the curtain theme with crisscross sheer window scarves. Simply drape the ends of two panels over each side of the curtain rod. Use double-sided tape to adhere the scarf panels to the rod. Loosely cross the sheer panels over the window opening, and secure on either side with tiebacks. Add a third scarf as a decorative swag to complete the look.

Drapery Accent

Pair a window scarf with existing drapery panels. Find a coordinating or contrasting fabric to swag across the top of the window to add a new dimension to your current window treatment design. The ends of the scarf can hang to the floor or provide a shorter side accent.

Bishop's Sleeve

The bishop's sleeve design idea complements tall windows by framing the opening with regal poufs of fabric. Fashion a double swag along the width of the curtain rod. Gather the ends of the window scarf fabric and thread through decorative napkin or curtain rings. Position the rings halfway up each length of the scarf. Install a hook on each side of the window casing slightly higher than the rings. Hang the rings on the hooks, and fluff out the bishop's sleeves. Choose an extra-long window scarf to provide the necessary length for this design.
