Use Wooden Blocks For Learning

Wooden blocks are an invaluable tool for enhancing education.

Wooden blocks are ideal for helping children improve fine motor skills, count and expand their imaginations and can even reinforce letter recognition and reading. They are especially useful when teaching pre-school and younger primary grades, since these students have shorter attention spans. Using wooden blocks will allow students to play as they learn, which will help keep them attentive. Wooden blocks are available in multiple sizes and colors, and some have alphabet letters or numbers on their surfaces to further enhance their educational value.

Instructions

Teaching with Wooden Blocks

1. Place a small pile of wooden alphabet blocks on the floor next to each student. Ask students how many blocks are in their piles. Encourage them to pick up each block as they count them.

2. Hold up a large piece of construction paper in a color that is on some of the blocks. Tell students the name of the color. Ask the students to find a block with the same color and hold it up. Repeat the process until students have found blocks for every color they are given.

3. Use the blocks to reinforce letters. Review the alphabet with students. Then ask them to find different letters on their blocks. As the students get more adept at finding letters, let them create simple words with the blocks.

4. Place students in pairs. Encourage them to build a tower with the blocks or use the blocks to create a larger square or rectangle.
