Talk Like A Ventriloquist

Learning to talk like a ventriloquist requires a lot of practice talking between clenched teeth.

Ventriloquism is a special talent in which a person speaks without moving his lips and creates a unique, often funny voice for a dummy puppet he is holding. The ventriloquist makes it look like the dummy is talking. It takes years of practice to master the art, and not everyone can succeed in this tricky craft. However, ventriloquists have shared some secrets and tips about talk without moving your lips. You too can learn the basic technique.

Instructions

1. Practice speaking with your mouth closed and teeth clenched. Do not bite down hard, and keep your lips parted enough so you can breathe through them. Notice the placement of your tongue while you do this. While speaking with your teeth clenched, your tongue naturally moves to the bottom of your mouth.

2. Perform some tongue placement exercises. Make an "ahh" sound, as though a doctor is examining your throat. As you make the sound, press your tongue flat against the bottom of your mouth. Release your tongue and make the "ahh" sound, and then flatten your tongue again as you make the sound. Repeat this several times. Release your tongue and speak with it in its normal position, and then try speaking with it pressed to the bottom of your mouth.

3. Put Steps 2 and 3 together. Speak in your normal voice and move your lips normally. Then shift into ventriloquist mode and speak with your teeth clenched and the tongue at the bottom of the mouth. When speaking through clenched teeth, you'll notice you speak mostly through your nose.

4. Experiment by speaking in different sounding voices while keeping your teeth clenched. Get a good feel for the new voices you are producing.
