Stain Travertine Tile

Mop the floor to prepare travertine tile for stain.

Many consider basic travertine tile too plain and boring. If you are one of these people, know that a fresh coat of quality stain can transform ordinary travertine tile into something beautiful. Because travertine tile is so porous, a quality wood stain is all you need to make it look great. Still, before you get started, there are a few preparation and application techniques you should know that will help you avoid messes and leave a finish you can be proud of.

Instructions

1. Remove any items that may interfere with the staining process, including tables and chairs.

2. Turn off the heater or air conditioner if you have vents that run along the travertine tile.

3. Clean the travertine tile thoroughly, using a mop and dish soap. Do not use harsh cleaners as they may leave residue that could interfere with the staining process. Allow the surface to dry completely.

4. Apply blue painter's tape to areas you want protected form stain. Cover carpeting and flooring adjacent to the travertine tile with plastic or fabric dropcloths.

5. Pour 1 gallon of wood stain into the 2-gallon painter's pot. Stir the stain with a wooden stir stick for one minute, effectively mixing the tannins to encourage even color distribution.

6. Apply the stain to the tile with a 4-inch paintbrush for oil-based paint. Start in one far corner and work backward, being careful not to "paint" yourself into a corner. Allow the stain to dry for 24 hours.

7. Apply another coat if you desire a darker appearance.
