Remove Old Paint From Brass Door Knobs

You can remove the overlapping red paint on this brass doorknob.

Older homes are notorious for having unwanted paint on existing brass doorknobs. Over years of repainting the doors, inexperienced painters get paint on the brass surface while painting around the doorknob. The paint is either oil based or water based. If it's an older home, the paint will usually be oil based and will need to be removed with a chemical stripper. If its water-based paint, you can use mineral spirits or paint thinner, but chemical stripper is the easiest and quickest solution to remove both types of paint.

Instructions

1. Remove the brass knob from the door using either a flat-head or hex-head screwdriver.

2. Lay down a drop cloth and put on goggles, rubber gloves and a respirator.

3. Apply chemical paint stripper to the painted areas of the knob using a paintbrush. Read the label of the chemical paint stripper to see how long it will take for the chemical reaction to take place. Watch as the old paint begins to bubble and lift off the brass knob surface.

4. Wipe off loose paint with paper towels. Repeat Step 3 until all layers of old paint are removed. Wash the knob with soap and water once all paint is removed.
