Remove Animal Droppings From Car Paint

remove animal droppings from a vehicle

Rain and stray shopping carts aside, bird droppings can be public enemy number one to a car lover and his car's finish. Before rushing to wipe away the "gift" with a paper towel or scrubbing it off, there are a few simple tips which can rid your car of the splat without harming the paint. Keeping a few inexpensive supplies in the trunk for such emergencies can keep your vehicle looking new despite even the worst bird bombs.

Instructions

Understand the bird and the bird bomb

1. Bird droppings are acidic, and the longer droppings sit the more damage they can cause.

2. Birds eat gravel as part of their digestive process, making their droppings gritty, so therefore simply wiping the droppings from the car can scratch its finish.

3. You can minimize your risk of being bombed by bird droppings by not parking under trees, power lines and other bird havens. Even taking these precautions may not prevent bird droppings, however; sometimes birds are drawn to their own reflection in your car's polished finish, particularly during mating season--hey, nobody ever accused them of not having bird brains.

4. Keep a bottle or two of no-salt seltzer in the trunk of your car. Spray a fresh bird bomb off with a water hose, or if there isn't one available, take the lid off the no salt seltzer, shake it up and then release the blast of water onto the dropping. The seltzer is water and carbon dioxide, and will not hurt the car's finish or leave a residue if quickly removed.

5. For a dried dropping, fold the microfiber polishing cloth until it's as thick as possible and then spray one side of it with the spray detailer for lubrication. Place the lubricated cloth onto the dried bird dropping and then wet, but don't saturate, the cloth with water to penetrate the dropping. Wait about ten minutes and wrap the cloth around the bird bomb and lift it off the car, rather than wipe it off.

6. Apply your choice of polishing compound or scratch remover to the spot after the bird dropping has been removed. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when applying the compound and remover, then apply a thick coat of car wax for added protection.
