Use Latex Paint In A Hvlp Paint Gun

Use Latex Paint in a HVLP Paint Gun

The HVLP spray gun provides a high volume fine finish under low pressure. It is used for smaller projects such as painting woodwork, doors, furniture, and cabinets. An HVLP sprayer does not create excessive over spray, which makes it suitable for inside projects such as painting doors, cabinets, and built in bookcases. To spray latex paint with an HVLP, you need what is known as a three-stage unit. The three-stage unit has a larger motor that is capable of pushing the paint through the gun without thinning it.

Instructions

1. Set the paint cup on a work table without the gun attached to it. Place a cone shaped HVLP filter in the cup. Pour paint into the filter, and allow it to flow through the filter screen into the cup. As the paint recedes, pour more paint into the filter until the paint cup is 3/4 of the way full.

2. Screw the gun onto the paint cup, and attach the air hose to the end of the gun handle. Turn the HVLP on. The power button is located on the side of the unit.

3. Hold the gun at least 6 inches from the surface of the practice board and squeeze the trigger on the gun. Spray back and forth in a sweeping motion and overlap each pass by a minimum of 4 inches. Keep the gun moving while the trigger is pulled in and release the trigger at the end of each pass.

4. Adjust the angle of the spray by turning the nozzle horizontally for a horizontal spray pattern, and vertically for a vertical spray pattern. The nozzle is in the center of the gun where the paint comes out.

5. Adjust the width of the spray pattern by turning the ring that surrounds the spray nozzle. Turn the ring to the right to reduce the width, and turn the ring to the left to make the spray pattern wider.

6. Adjust the air flow knob located at the top of the backside of the gun, or on the hose. Turn the knob to the right for less air, and to the left for more air. More air will make paint drier and thinner as it comes out of the gun.

7. Turn the paint flow knob that is located underneath the airflow knob on the back of the gun to the left for more paint, and to the right for less paint.
