Tricks With Zippo Lighters

Old Hollywood movies often feature a character performing a Zippo lighter trick.

Zippo lighter tricks add panache to the act of lighting a cigar or cigarette. Old Hollywood films often feature a character who performs a trick with a lighter to convey an air of sophistication or a sense of being "hip." Many tricks have been developed, from the simple to the complex, and involve not only opening and closing the lighter but also creating spinning flames. Always be sure to exercise caution when performing a Zippo trick and do so in a responsible manner.

The Lid Smack

The "Lid Smack" is a classic trick that can be seen in many Hollywood films. Take the lighter and hold it firmly between your thumb and forefinger on the opening and hinge side. With a little bit of force, quickly smack the Zippo against your knee or a nearby tabletop. As you do so, flip the lighter in the opposite direction of the hinge. This causes the lid to flip open and the flame to pop up.

The Squeeze

The "Squeeze" is basic trick that is easy to perform. Balance the Zippo at an angle in your hand, with the base of the Zippo on the hinge side resting on the center of your palm. Place your thumb on the outside edge away from the hinge. Set your index and middle finger on the top of the lighter. Quickly slide them down the back of the Zippo with a light pressure until the lid flips open. The lighter then straightens itself in your hands.

Double Flip

The "Double Flip" adds a bit of finesse to the act of lighting a Zippo. Place the Zippo tightly between your thumb and index finger without blocking the cap. Flip the cap, making sure to hit it from underneath. As the cap lifts up, keep gripping the lighter in your hand. Flip the striking wheel from above to get a light.

The Butterfly 2

The "Butterfly 2" is a more complicated trick that will take time to master. Hold the lighter with both hands with the hinge pointing down. With your right index finger and right thumb holding the lid, place your left index finger and left thumb around the case to hold it in place. Open the lighter and turn it around in your hand, spinning it around your middle fingers until the case sits between your left middle finger and your left ring finger, with the lid between your right middle finger and your right ring finger. Ignite the lighter with your left thumb on the strike wheel. Spin the lighter back around your middle finger and index finger, using your left thumb to place the lighter in between your left index finger and left middle finger. Close the lighter using your right middle finger.
