Techniques To Spray Paint A Mirror Frame

Always point the can away from your face.

If the frame around your mirror doesn't match the room's color scheme, you don't have to buy a new mirror -- you can simply repaint the frame. Even if the mirror doesn't come out of the frame, you can spray paint it to give the entire piece a new look. You must take the proper precautions when using spray paint, though, or you can ruin your piece or even inhale dangerous fumes. If you plan ahead and exercise caution, the project won't take more than an hour or so.

Removing the Frame

Not unlike a photo frame, some mirror frames are designed to come off. If you can remove the mirror from your frame before painting it, that is ideal -- it is a foolproof way to ensure that no stray paint gets on the mirror's reflective surface. Check the back of the mirror for screws that attach to the frame -- if there are none, it may not be removable.

Taping

If the mirror does not come out of the frame, your only recourse is to cover the reflective surface of the mirror. Use either duct tape or masking tape for this process. First, tape over all of the broad areas of the mirror's surface. Then tear off strips of tape that you can press into the crack where the frame meets the mirror. Your goal is to completely cover all of the reflective surface, including the hard-to-see spaces -- if paint gets on, it will surely show.

Creating a Workspace

The best place to spray paint is outside, so take your frame and supplies outdoors to create your workspace. Go to a well-ventilated area without much direct exposure to wind or sun. Lay down either a plastic tarp or several overlapping newspapers to create a large work area. Put on latex gloves and a breathing mask before you begin.

Proper Painting

The type of spray paint you use depends on the frame -- for example, some spray paints are specially formulated for use on plastic or metal. Choose the paint that's right for your project and shake it well before using -- at least 1 minute. When you spray, make a smooth, sweeping motion with the can, holding it 6 to 8 inches away from the frame. Don't worry if the frame shows through -- when working with spray paint, you should do several thin coats instead of one thick coat. Wait 24 hours between layers and again before reattaching the mirror.
