Painting a tinted glaze on furniture that has already been painted can freshen the look of the furniture piece. You can add more dimension, shine and newness to a piece of furniture that you may feel is drab or old-looking. Painting a glaze is an easy and affordable do-it-yourself project.
Instructions
1. Choose your color.
You can choose to buy a glaze that has already been colored or you can color it on your own. If you choose to color it on your own, you will need to mix four parts glaze to one part paint. However, if the instructions from the manufacturer vary, follow those. It is recommended that you use a water-based paint and a water-based glaze because it is easier and less messy.
2. An impromptu color wheel.
Test your color on a piece of poster board to make sure it is what you have imagined. The less paint that is added, the more translucent the color will be. When you are mixing a lighter color, the value of the paint will not be altered by mixing it with glaze. With darker colors, the value can change, so be careful that you are getting your desired results.
3. Use a paintbrush to apply colored glaze.
Apply your glaze to the cleaned furniture surface. Paint the glaze on just as you would paint, with a brush or roller. Work in sections to prevent mistakes, because glaze dries quickly. Let the glaze dry, which will take about 20 minutes.
