Types Of Theater Makeup

Stage makeup comes in a variety of colors

Equally important to how an actor performs on stage is how he or she looks on stage. Theater makeup determines an actor's appearance. Theater or stage makeup can have an effect on how much of an actor's face the audience sees in conjunction with stage lighting. It can also be used to make actors appear older or inhuman. While makeup artists may be hired for theater productions, actors should have a basic knowledge of the types of theater makeup.

Powders and Sealers

Powders are used to absorb oil and moisture from the skin in addition to being used to add color and set makeup in place. Powders come in different shades and colors and should be selected for facial application based on an actor or performer's color or shade of skin. Similarly, sealers are also used to keep makeup in place. Sealers are especially important for actors and performers who perspire heavily. Sealers, unlike powders, are liquid-based. Ben Nye is one of the leading manufacturers of powders and sealers for the stage.

Lip Color and Lip Pencils

An effective makeup artist has the ability to make an actor or performer's facial features visible to audience members farthest away from the stage. Among the facial features that can be buried by stage lighting are the lips. Thus, lip coloring and lip pencils are used to add not only color but also shape to the lips. Lip rouge colors the lips while being able to withstand the intense heat from stage lighting. Lip pencils are used to define the lips and set lip makeup in line.

Concealers

Many actors and performers---for aesthetic reasons primarily---wish to cover up birthmarks, tattoos and facial blemishes. In some cases, depending on lighting, these characteristics may be visible to the audience. Concealers are used to cover such facial attributes. Concealers, like powders and sealers, also come in various colors and shades. Typically, concealers are used after foundation has been applied and is best applied to the face with via a cream or stick as opposed to liquid. Leading manufacturers of concealers include Ben Nye and Mehron.
