Spray Paint Art Tools

Spray paint can be used to create beautiful works of art.

If you're looking for a unique way to unleash your artistic side, try a little spray paint art. Spray paint art is created using spray paint, stencils and various other tools to create brightly colored and unusual works of art. Generally, a spray paint art creation uses poster board or any other non-porous material such as glass or metal. To get started, all you need are the right tools.

Spray Paint and Stencils

Buy all the colors of spray paint you will need before beginning your project. Some spray paint brands are Rustoleum, Krylon and WalMart brand, however most brand-name glossy spray paints will work. Read the label to know which spray paint is appropriate to use on the material you are painting. Find stencils that will give you the shapes or pictures that fit with your project. Make your own stencils by cutting shapes out of sturdy cardboard. Use box tops to trace squares or triangles, and jar lids if you need to trace a circle.

Tarp

Working with spray paint is messy, so cover up anything you don't want to get paint on. Generally, spray paint art projects are done using large poster board or a large canvas laid out on the ground. Cover the grass, pavement or floor where you are working. Inexpensive tarps can be found at a paint store or hardware store in many different sizes.

Other Supplies

To create a unique spray paint art project, you're going to need certain other supplies. Use an old sponge to blot the spray paint. This will create a unique texture. Paint brushes can fine-tune the details of your spray paint creation. Have a pen or pencil handy if you need to sketch a picture or words onto your canvas or poster board, and bring a ruler so that you'll have a straight edge to use. You may also need a knife or scissors to resize or reshape your canvas. Don't forget your stencils. They are one of the most important accessories in spray painting.

Safety Precaution Tools

As a safety precaution, wear a respirator over your mouth and nose when you are using the spray paint to protect your lungs from any damaging paint fumes and tiny paint particles that could be inhaled and damage your health. Also be sure to wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from paint stains.
