Transfer Decorative Painting Designs To Glass Ornaments

Transfer Decorative Painting Designs to Glass Ornaments

Decorative glass ornaments hang from holiday trees, doorways, windowsills and ceilings. Painting glass ornaments is one craft project that requires little to no artistic ability. Easily transfer decorative painting designs to glass ornaments. Painted ornaments make thoughtful gifts that your friends and family can enjoy year 'round.

Instructions

1. Select stencils or templates with a decorative design that is small enough to fit onto the outside of a glass ornament. Craft stores have a wide selection of each, but you can also make your own from any image you like. To make a stencil, you need sheet protectors or any thick plastic sheet, a marker and scissors. Trace the design onto the plastic and cut out the inside portion to make the stencil. Draw templates onto any type of paper or card stock. The difference between a template and a stencil is that you cut out the main design of the stencil but cut out around the design for a template. When you transfer a template design, draw the outline of the design to later fill in with paint.

2. Place the ornament in an egg carton. Arrange it so that the area you wish to decorate is facing up.

3. Tape a stencil onto the outside of the glass ornament with painter's tape. Fill in the stencil cutout designs with a glass paint pen, a permanent marker or glass paint. If you use glass paint, use a stencil brush to dab a minimum amount of paint onto the glass at a time. Glass paint pens are the simplest way to add color to the stencil cutouts.

4. Tape a template to the outside of the glass ornament. Trace around the design with a glass paint pen, permanent marker or grease pencil to create an outline. You can remove the grease pencil after painting to leave the outline of the design on the clear glass. Remove the template. Add color between the lines of the design with glass or enamel paint. Both types of paint are designed to adhere to slick surfaces.
