Research Grants For Women In The Arts

While there is potential to make a lot of money as a female artist or art historian there are far more "starving" artists than wealthy ones. At some point in your art career you may have to rely on grants in order to complete the research for an upcoming work. In this highly competitive process it is essential to target funders that specialize in sponsoring research projects conducted by (or about) women.

Creative Capital

Creative Capital is a New York-based organization that specializes in supporting individual artists on a rolling basis. Grants are awarded up to $20, 000. For example, the Art Writers Grant program provides funding for books and other media that discusses contemporary visual art. Applications are accepted online or at the main office.

The Getty

To promote the understanding and appreciation of visual art, The Getty Foundation supports art research. Its largest initiative funding research projects is "Art History as a Global Discipline." Projects in this category focus on art translation and international academic collaboration. An example of a project funded by this initiative is the "The Herculaneum Women and the Origins of Archaeology " exhibit at the Getty Villa in California.
