Restore Old Car Paint

Cars can get worn and rusty over time.

Restoring the paint on a car can bring a new look to the vehicle for minimal costs. An old car can be made to look brand new and bringing back the color can also greatly increase the value of the car. Restoring paint on any car is a task that can be accomplished by almost any car owner and with a little time and patience, that old car can be looking brand new once again.

Instructions

1. Remove any decals, stickers or emblems from the car. They may be covering areas where the paint will be restored and must be removed for proper restoration. Blow out the seams around the doors and windows with an air blower. This will remove any dust and dirt that is hiding.

2. Wash the car thoroughly with household dishwashing soap such as Dawn and water to remove any grease, debris or dirt from the surface of the car. This will also help remove any traces of wax and sealer that may remain. Allow the car time to properly air dry.

3. Clean the paint with a clay bar. This will remove the oxidation from the car. Move the clay around the entire car and use a spray bottle of water as a lubricant. Use as much clay as necessary to pull off all the tar and other abrasive impurities from the finish.

4. Continue rubbing the clay over the entire area of the car until it has been thoroughly completed. This may take several hours or even an entire day. Check to see that the paint is completely smooth and level. When everything is level, the clay bar is complete. Dry the car with a clean soft terry cloth.

5. Apply a coat of sealer to the car with a spray gun and working in sections. Begin with the hood and move around the entire area of the car until completed. Allow the car two full days to dry and then wash the car thoroughly once again to give it a proper shine.
