Read a Car's VIN Number


a vin number is like a birth certificate for a car. in this article i will teach you decode these number and letters.


Instructions


1. vin numbers consist of 17 numbers ( older cars may have less).the first number (or letter) refers to where the car was manufactured. USA-1 or 4

k-korea

z-italy


2. the second number (or letter) lets you know the manufacturer.

3. the third digit tells you the vehicle type.


digits 4-8 is for the manufacturer. these 5 digits identify certain options the vehicle may or may not have such as motor type or body style.


the ninth digit is a check digit. it will is a digit that makes that vin unique.


the tenth digit is the model year.

4. the 11th digit identifies the plant the car was assembled.


digits 12-17 are specific to that car. it is a number in sequence of when it rolled off the assembly line.
