Appliance dollies are available in several different styles.
If you are planning to move, and wish to load your appliances yourself, using an appliance dolly is a must. These convenient carrying tools have wheels and allow you to move heavy appliances without much effort. They are common in a number of styles and often available in locations that sell and rent moving equipment.
Appearance
An appliance dolly is a metal framed piece of moving equipment that is shaped like the letter "L." It is built of steel tubing, with handles at the top and a flat plate along the bottom part of the "L," with large, rubber tires between the flat plate and the vertical structure. Appliance dollies also have a number of metal tubes welded between the handle uprights for strength and sturdiness, and heavy, canvas straps attached to the uprights.
Use
To use an appliance dolly, slide the flat plate underneath an appliance such as a stove, washing machine or dryer. Wrap the canvas straps around the mid-section of the appliance, then secure the straps tightly by snugging up the buckles on them. Have an assistant gently push on the front of the appliance as you stand behind the dolly and rock it back toward you. When the plate of the dolly is up off the ground, you can easily roll the appliance around.
Availability
An appliance dolly isn't something you would necessarily buy, unless you choose to move frequently. Instead, it's ideal to rent this tool. You can often rent appliance dollies at stores that specialize in rentals for moving. If you rent a truck for moving, you can often rent an appliance dolly at the same time. Many moving trucks include racks for securing appliance dollies.
Other Styles
The "L" style of appliance dolly is ideal because you don't have to first lift the appliance to get it mobile. Other styles, however, include a square piece of wood, often carpeted, that has wheels at each corner. This style usually has a tow rope that allows you to tow the appliance with ease.
