Theater Arts Grants

There are a number of grant programs available for the theater arts.


There are a number of sources for grant funding for individual artists and ensemble groups working in the theater arts. Grants are available to help fund the creation and performance of new theater productions as well as grants for travel, music composition and career enrichment. The purpose of these grant programs is to allow performing artists to develop their creative talent while increasing awareness of theater arts in the community.


Ensemble Theatre Collaborations Grant & Travel Subsidy Program


The Association of Performing Arts Presenters in conjunction with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation sponsors the Ensemble Theatre Collaborations Grant & Travel Subsidy Program for individuals who participate in ensemble theater productions. The program provides grants for theater directors, producers, presenters, agents and artists to fund international and domestic touring productions. The maximum grant award is $2,000 per applicant and funds may not be used for any purpose other than travel costs for a touring performance.

Theatre Communications Group Grant Awards


The Theatre Communications Group sponsors several grant awards for individuals and groups involved in the theater arts. Grant awards may be used for a number of purposes, including acting courses, career development for directors and set designers, and a residency program for playwrights and touring productions. Selection for these programs are highly competitive. Grant awards range from $2,000 to $50,000.

Jonathan Larson Grant


The American Theatre Wing sponsors the Jonathan Larson Grant for individual artists and collaborative teams working in the theater arts. The grant is available to composers, lyricists and book writers who plan to pursue projects designed for musical theater. Grant awards are intended for professionals working in the theater and may not be used for tuition purposes. The amount of the grant varies, and all awards are based on merit.

The Puffin Foundation Theater Grants


The Puffin Foundation sponsors grant awards for emerging artists who plan to pursue careers in the theater arts. The program provides grants of $1,000 to $2,500 for qualified applicants whose projects may not otherwise receive funding due to their genre or the nature of their creative vision. Funds may not be used for tuition purposes, travel expenses or large-scale projects.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Grants


The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation administers multiple grant programs for individual theater artists and theater organizations. Grants for individual artists may be used to fund professional development or the creation and performance of new theater projects. Grants for theater organizations may be used to fund professional development programs for theater leaders or for outreach programs that are designed to expand the theater arts audience. Grant awards vary based on project budgeting and foundation funding.
