What Earplugs To Use For Swimmers

The right earplugs can keep your ears infection-free.

Most people think of rock concerts when they think of earplugs, but the earplugs used by swimmers are fundamentally different from those that protect against high decibel noise. The ultimate goal, however, is the same -- to protect your ears. Swimmers are at risk for various ear infections and a condition called "swimmer's ear" that can ultimately lead to hearing loss, so taking the appropriate precautions is crucial to your health.

Hearos, Water Protection Series

Created with three soft flanges to keep water out, these plastic earplugs protect the delicate tissue of the ear canal from prolonged exposure to water. They were designed with swimmers and surfers in mind and prevent the ear canal from "water-logging." They come in a one size fits all design and can be worn by children and adults.

Mack's Aquablock Earplugs

These soft earplugs can be used for swimming, bathing, showering, surfing or any other activity that results in the head being submerged in water. They are also washable and reusable, keeping water out of the ear canal for long periods of time. This design is made of silicon, is pre-molded and has a triple-flanged construction that provides a customized fit while sealing water out. These earplugs were created and tested with the purpose of preventing ear infections and swimmer's ear.

Doc's Proplugs

For those who plan on swimming beyond just the surface, Doc's Proplugs not only protect against infection, but also reduce "ear squeeze," or the inability to equalize the pressure between the middle and outer ear. They can also be used to protect against thermal reaction and vertigo. These earplugs are especially ideal for divers. Water is prevented from entering the ear canal until a diver goes deeper than 20 feet, at which point some water is allowed in for equalization. They are made of hypoallergenic Kraton that forms a watertight seal.

Filtered Swimming/Surfing Earplugs

This earplug's design is unique because it provides a sealed membrane that keeps cold air and water out of your ears, yet still allows the user to hear his surroundings. This makes it especially useful for those who engage in water activities that still require the ability to hear (such as water rescue, kayaking and surfing). Made of heat-cured silicon, they continue to feel flexible after being placed in the ear and should last for several years.
