Unwrinkle A Watercolor Painting

One disadvantage of painting on watercolor paper is the tendency of the paper to wrinkle when wet. Watercolor papers are available in various weights, but even the heaviest weights tend to buckle or wrinkle. By taping down the watercolor paper before you paint, and leaving the painting to dry completely before you remove the tape, you can prevent some wrinkling. You can completely flatten and unwrinkle a dry, finished painting on watercolor paper with a few supplies and steps.

Instructions

1. Obtain two masonite boards at least the size of your watercolor painting.

2. Place one masonite board on a flat surface with the smooth side facing up.

3. Lay your dry watercolor painting facedown on the board.

4. Mist the back of the painting with a gentle mist sprayer. Do not saturate the paper or the colors will run. A light mist on the entire surface of the paper will be enough.

5. Place a layer of paper towels over the paper.

6. Place the second masonite board, with the smooth side down, on top of the paper towels.

7. Place weights on top of the masonite board, weighing down the center and edges of the board. Use stacks of large, heavy books or bricks as weights.

8. Leave the weights in place on the board overnight or longer to allow thorough drying.
